What is rowing?
So, what is rowing?
Rowing is a sport in which athletes compete against one another by racing through a course of either 2000 meters or 1000 meters. It is also known as Regatta. The rules are simple but precise rowing posture and race strategies are the important factors that make rowing a very attractive and challenging sport.
There are many types of boats. Mainly, we divide it into two types: the sweep, and the scull. In sweep, each rower has one oar, held with both hands which in scull each rower has two smaller oars (or sculls), one in each hand.
+ Eight
Sweep type with eight rowers and one coxswain. In rowing, this is the largest and the fastest of all.
+ Coxed four
Sweep type with four rowers and one coxswain. There are other types such as the coxless four or a four as a scull (quadruple scull) amongst other boats with four rowers.
+ Double scull
Scull type with two rowers.
+Single Scull
Scull type with single rower. The only race with a single rower.
In Japan, rowing is a sport that people only pick up upon entering college. This is because most of the middle and high schools in Japan do not have rowing clubs. Majority of our members in Rikoh rowing club started rowing from college level.
